Scope of this Position
The co-op student will work under the general supervision of a scientist in the department, with daily direct supervision in the laboratory by a research associate. They will be trained in general laboratory procedures and in a limited number of standard assays required for routine departmental operations. After demonstrating proficiency in designated assays the student will perform routine assays under the continuing supervision of both scientific and technical staff.
Accountabilities & Deliverables
The co-op student will be responsible for conducting assays designed to measure the effectiveness of Xenon’s novel chemical entities. The student will be expected to carry out routine sample preparation and will be given the opportunity to conduct independent studies to assist in implementing new assays or to provide a detailed characterization of compounds using existing methods. In addition to these responsibilities, the student will also be expected to assist in electronically cataloguing and maintaining Xenon’s extensive chemical inventory.
Knowledge & Education Requirements
- Completed two or more years of undergraduate science in biology and/or chemistry
- Certificate level instruction in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous: WHMIS, Isotope training, Bio safety training and Chemical training
- NSERC eligibility is a requirementBSc in Chemistry or Bio-Chemistry
